Not All Memory Cards Are Equal: What We Actually Use for Photo and Video Shoots
Memory cards don’t get much attention, until something goes wrong. A slow write speed, a corrupted file, or a missed moment can turn a great shoot into a stressful one. That’s why we take memory cards seriously. They’re small, but they carry everything.
Here’s what we actually look for and use behind the scenes.
Speed isn’t optional, it’s critical
For photography, especially during events, speed determines whether we capture the moment or miss it. Fast burst shooting requires cards that can keep up without buffering. For video, it’s even more demanding. High-resolution formats need consistent write speeds to avoid dropped frames or recording failures.
We rely on cards with strong speed ratings like UHS-II, V60, or V90 for demanding work. Brands like SanDisk, Sony, and ProGrade are often our go-to for this reason. They’re built for performance, not just storage.
Not all brands perform the same under pressure
We’ve tested and used a range of brands over time. Lexar and Kingston offer reliable options for both photo and moderate video use. Samsung and PNY can be great for backup or secondary storage.
But during high-pressure events like weddings or live coverage, we stick to cards we trust fully. Consistency matters more than saving a few dollars. When there are no second chances, reliability becomes everything.
Capacity, backups, and real-world workflow
Bigger isn’t always better. Instead of relying on one large card, we often rotate multiple cards throughout a shoot. This reduces risk and keeps files organized. It also speeds up our workflow when transferring and backing up images later.
We label, format, and test every card before a session. After the shoot, files are backed up immediately, often in multiple locations. This system ensures that every image captured across Toronto, the Greater Toronto Area, Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, and Guelph is protected from start to finish.
Memory cards may be small, but they hold irreplaceable moments. Choosing the right ones is part of delivering consistent, professional results every time.
